This is our last week together talking about pet allergies, and I’ve saved the most common allergic disorder for last: Flea Allergy Dermatitis. We know fleas are no joke for any dog or cat, but for those with allergies, it can cause severe itching, skin infections, and hair loss. As pets, we are awesome groomers despite the baths you humans make us take. Our licking and chewing are our ways of getting rid of nasty pests that are bothering our skin. Most owners won’t be able to detect the fleas causing the problem.
The best way to fight these nasty pests is to use preventative medications. There are numerous kinds of topical and oral medications that will help prevent fleas, ticks, and even mosquitoes. These parasites end up causing not only skin problems, but can cause serious immune disorders as well. Liberty Vet stocks Bravecto for dogs and Advantage Multi in house for our feline friends. But you can also order a variety of other flea and tick products from their online pharmacy.
And don’t think that just because your fur baby lives indoors that they can’t get fleas. Pests can hitchhike on your clothes or other objects to get in the house. If you have any pets that go outdoors, they can also bring parasite back in with them, which can infect their “indoor only” friends too.
If your fur baby does get fleas, you will have additional work to get rid of the parasites. Indoor and outdoor area flea treatments, wash all bedding, vacuum carpets and upholstery, and our favorite, flea baths. So, do the right thing and use flea prevention monthly all year round. Remember if your pet is itching and biting, be sure to investigate to find out which allergy (food, inhalants, or parasites) could be the cause. Your furry loved one will be most grateful. And never be afraid to reach out to your veterinarian for help when it comes to taking care of your beloved pet. As always, stay current with us at Libertyvet.net.
Now for some fun! Can you figure out the answer to this fallen word puzzle?
