April Pet of the Month! – Gemma Hammer

Gemma is almost 10 1/2 years old, born on Thanksgiving Day in 2010, one of 10! Her Mama, Ruby, unfortunately died when she was 4 weeks old. She was bred by a dear friend in NE Ohio. Her mama and papa are both champions and they were bred for health and temperament more than looks. For that I am grateful, considering the breed’s life expectancy.

Gemma has been trained to be a therapy dog, but sadly, because of her shyness around men (which we have been mostly unable to condition out for her on any consistent level), she was unable to pass that test. But she has a very sweet temperament and loves, loves, LOVES children… boys and girls, as well as puppies and other dogs. She loves the snow, as all good Bernese Mountain Dogs do and loves to be outside. She has some training in Rally but does not compete and prefers to use it as a game at home.

In her younger days she was pretty active but is slowing down a bit now. She adores my grandson, even though he is getting older, and his voice is getting deeper. She never leaves his side when he visits. She is still as sweet-natured as she ever was and loves her people!
